Adam Cole was a heel when MJF took him out at AEW Double or Nothing, but he was a babyface when he returned at AEW WrestleDream.

Speaking on Stick To Wrestling with James Stewart, Adam Cole was asked about coming back as a good guy after he was a heel when he left.

“I understand why big-time why a lot of this could be confusing or hard to understand, but I think the easiest way for me to put this is to do my best remind everyone who the real MJF is,” Adam Cole said. “I mean this truthfully. Did what I do, did what the Undisputed Kingdom do, was it mean, nasty, and a little extreme? Yeah, it probably was, but it needed to be. MJF really needed to be taught a lesson. The way he’s treated anyone he’s ever interacted with, all throughout AEW, this guy has shown his true colors time and time again, and the truth is, Adam Cole, I may be a nice guy, but I’m also not stupid. I know what type of guy that MJF is. I know the lesson that I needed to teach him, and it was a mean one.”

Adam Cole: My Story With MJF Is Different, It’s Intriguing

Cole went on to explain that it was a confusing situation, but life was filled with shades of gray.

“But I really do think for the betterment of AEW, otherwise MJF is gonna walk all over everyone for years and years and years. If I’m the guy who needs to teach him that lesson, then so be it. I do care about my fans, I do care about AEW. MJF, all he’s ever cared about is himself, even though he wants you to believe that he pretended to care about our friendship. He kept me close because he felt like I was a threat. I think anyone who’s smart enough to really pay attention will realize that. I know it’s a confusing situation, but life can be confusing sometimes and filled with shades of gray. But I stand by what I did.”

“It’s intriguing, it is. It’s different, it’s not as black and white as things can be sometimes in the world of professional wrestling. I know some people have questioned it before too, but it I stand by that even though it looked like the wrong thing to do, in the long run, it will be the right thing to do.”
