Al Schultz Dies: ‘Carol Burnett Show’, ‘All In The Family’, ‘Good Times’ Makeup Artist & Husband Of Vicki Lawrence Was 82

Al Schultz, a top CBS makeup artist for The Carol Burnett Show and several groundbreaking Norman Lear sitcoms including All in the Family and Good Times and was married to Vicki Lawrence for nearly 50 years, has died. He was 82.

His publicist said today that Schultz died June 19 at his home in Long Beach, CA, but did not give details.

Born Alvin Schultz in 1942 in Wisconsin, he moved to Los Angeles and found work in Hollywood as a camera dolly operator and grip before pivoting to become a makeup artist. He joined variety hit The Carol Burnett Show during its third season in 1969 and would work in its makeup department for more than 180 episodes through 1977.

It was there he met Lawrence, the show’s co-star and future Mama’s Family lead. They would have celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary this year.

Schultz was just 30 when was promoted to Head of West Coast CBS Makeup in 1972 and was the youngest person to hold that position. During the 1970s, he worked on Lear’s culture-shaping hits All in the Family, The Jeffersons, Good Times, Maude and Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman along with hit variety hour The Sonny and Cher Show.

He also worked on Laugh-In, The Merv Griffin Show, Hollywood Squares, The Dean Martin Show, The Tim Conway Comedy Hour — led by the longtime Carol Burnett Show regular — The Lily Tomlin Show and TV movies Once Upon a Mattress and The Easter Promise. He also worked with such stars as Marilyn Monroe, Doris Day and Donna Reed.

Among Schultz’s final credits was Elvis in Concert, the CBS special recorded on Elvis Presley‘s final tour weeks before his death and aired posthumously in October 1977. Parts of the special surfaced in the seminal 1981 theatrical documentary This Is Elvis, produced by David L. Wolper.

Along with Lawrence, Schultz is survived by their son Garrett and daughter Courtney.
