Andrew Garfield and Ayo Edebiri praise the work environment director Luca Guadagnino created on the set of After the Hunt.

The actors talked to Deadline at CinemaCon where they talked about what surprised them the most about working with the filmmaker of movies like Queer, Challengers, Bones and All and Call Me By Your Name.

“What was exciting and surprising about being with Luca on set was how loose he is, how relaxed he is, how kind of spontaneous, in the moment and totally focused when he needs to be, but he seems to be allowing the day and the scene and the moment to be found,” Garfield told Deadline. “He’s such a precise filmmaker, simultaneously, so I found that deeply surprising.”

Garfield noted that he found the director to be “like a little rascal on set” and remembered Guadagnino coming up to him and asking him if he was OK following an “intense” first day on the film’s set.

“He would come up, like, ‘Darling, are you OK?’ And I’m like, ‘Yeah, I’m just trying to…’ And he’s like, ‘Will you always be like this, darling?’ Because he just wanted to, like, hang out in between. And I want to do that too. And on some days I can, but on certain days I can’t,” Garfield recalled. “But I was so impressed by how loose he was and how he was able to enjoy it.”

Edebiri agreed with Garfield and described working with Guadagnino as a “mix of complete openness and specificity of vision,” adding, “I think as an actor that fosters you to come up with so many things and understandings of your character.”

The Bear star said it was a “delight” to find out that the Italian filmmaker was a huge “cinephile” and “how knowledgeable he is.” Edebiri said she spent time “talking about movies and the things that he’s seen and is passionate about.”

“We talked about a lot of things [and] that we share a favorite movie of last year, which is Trap,” Edebiri added.

“Of course, M. Night [Shyamalan], amazing,” Guadagnino said.

Guadagnino also praised his cast, saying that “it was fantastic” working with them due to their “generosity” and the “precision” with which they work.

“One of the joy[s] of my life is to see people performing, and when they do the way they do, it’s incredible,” he said. “And eventually, at the end of the week, we were eager to see each other out of the set.”

After the Hunt is set to have a limited release starting October 10 with a nationwide rollout set for October 17. The film follows a college professor (Julia Roberts) who finds herself at a personal and professional crossroads when a star pupil (Edebiri) levels an accusation against one of her colleagues (Garfield), and a dark secret from her own past threatens to come to light. The cast also includes Michael Stuhlbarg, Chloë Sevigny, Lío Mehiel, Thaddea Graham, Will Price, Christine Dye, and Burgess Byrd.
