President Bola Tinubu has made a fresh declaration to be observed on April 7 of every year.

The President officially designated April 7 as National Police Day, a declaration made during the inaugural Nigeria Police Awards and Commendations ceremony at the Transcorp Hilton in Abuja, as conveyed by Vice President Kashim Shettima.

Tinubu emphasized the necessity of a profound transformation in the mindset and institutional memory of police officers as a core aspect of his administration’s ongoing efforts to modernize and professionalize the force. Since assuming office in 2023, his administration has initiated extensive reforms to revitalize the nation’s police force.

He underscored the importance of training and capacity-building for police personnel to equip them with the necessary expertise for contemporary policing tasks. Additionally, Tinubu announced that the Federal Government had designated the first week of April as Police Week, with April 7th marked as National Police Day in Nigeria.

Tinubu addressed the police officers present, emphasizing their human aspect and their role beyond mere protection, acknowledging their resilience amidst the nation’s security challenges and expressing confidence in a brighter future.

Highlighting comprehensive reforms, Tinubu stressed investment in training, capacity-building, and upgrading equipment and technology to bolster the force’s operational effectiveness. The government is committed to providing suitable equipment, weapons, and protection for officers in combat situations, along with measures to enhance officers’ status during and after their service.
