Senate President, Godswill Akpabio
Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has called for a thorough and transparent investigation into the allegations of “sexual harassment, intimidation, and mistreatment” levelled against Senate President Godswill Akpabio by Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan.
Atiku made the call in a statement issued on his Twitter handle on Friday, stressing that the claims were too serious to be ignored and must be handled with utmost diligence.
“Like millions of Nigerians, I watched with deep concern this morning as Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan raised serious allegations of sexual harassment, intimidation, and mistreatment against the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio,” he said.
He emphasised that the allegations require a credible and impartial probe to protect the integrity of the Nigerian Senate.
“These allegations are grave and deserve a thorough, impartial, and transparent investigation,” Atiku stated.
The former VP noted that the Senate represents the voice of the people and that those in leadership positions must uphold the highest standards of integrity and respect for public office.
“As the third most powerful figure in the country, the Senate President should embody unimpeachable character,” he added.
Atiku warned that sexual harassment in the workplace poses a major obstacle to women’s participation in governance and national development.
He insisted that such allegations, especially when involving a high-ranking official, should not be brushed aside.
“Sexual harassment in the workplace is a significant barrier to women’s advancement and, by extension, the nation’s progress. Allegations of such misconduct should never be simply dismissed, particularly when they involve a public officer with immense power, influence, and responsibility,” he said.
He further noted that the handling of the case would send a strong message about Nigeria’s commitment to justice, accountability, and the inclusion of women in leadership.
“I urge the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and the Senate itself to take these allegations seriously by ensuring a credible, transparent, and independent investigation,” he stated.
Atiku also pointed out the need for a safe and supportive environment for female legislators, highlighting that only four women currently serve in the Senate.
“With only four women currently serving in the Senate, it is imperative that we foster an environment where female legislators can serve without fear of harassment or intimidation,” he said.
The allegations by Akpoti-Uduaghan have stirred widespread reactions, with civil society organizations and gender rights advocates calling for decisive action.
