Barcelona defender Marcos Alonso might not have played for a long time but the veteran full-back continues to attract interest from fellow La Liga side Atletico Madrid, reports SPORT.

Alonso’s last appearance for Barcelona dates back to November 7, 2023, when Barcelona played Shakhtar Donetsk in the UEFA Champions League away from home. Barcelona lost 0-1 and the former Chelsea defender has been absent from action since.

The 33-year-old is currently recovering from a back problem and it is extremely unlikely that Barcelona would extend his contract, which runs out at the end of the season.

Alonso’s back luck with injury

In 2021, Alonso joined Barcelona and had a great year playing well at both the left-back and centre-back positions.

Due to his good performance, he got his contract extended for another season, however, this year, he faced bad luck with injuries and could only play for a long time, clocking just about 300 minutes in seven games.

In December, he had to undergo surgery for lower back pain, and according to Xavi’s statement on Friday before the League match against Celta Vigo, he still needs two or three more weeks to recover.

The coach also expressed disappointment about the timing of the injury, especially with Alejandro Balde’s injury, who will be out for the rest of the season, as Alonso could have had more playing time.

Atletico know where to strike

This is where Atletico want to take advantage. They know that Alonso would need around a month to return and in the next few months, he will be out of contract while also being match fit.

His name is being considered by the team’s sports management, especially because they might face defensive losses with the contracts of Axel Witsel and Mario Hermoso ending at the end of the season.

Considering the situation, Alonso might join Atletico, similar to his fellow countryman Cesar Azpilicueta, who Azpilicueta left Chelsea after nearly joining Barcelona the previous season.

As for Barcelona, it is believed that losing Alonso might not pose a big problem for the Blaugrana given his age and salary as his departure would only aid them in keeping their finances in check.
