Over the past few months, Barcelona have been linked with a plethora of midfielders as they are looking for long-term solutions to the pivot position.

While the club are working to bring in a new midfielder this month to cover for Gavi’s injury-enforced absence, the long-term plan is to sign a quality pivot midfielder in the summer window.

After all, Oriol Romeu has not exactly clicked in recent months and Xavi Hernandez does not have a natural backup in the position.

Several names, young and old, have been identified as possible options to reinforce the defensive midfield role in the summer, one of whom happens to be Arthur Vermeeren.

Barcelona interested in Arthur Vermeeren

Indeed, Barcelona hold an interest in Royal Antwerp’s Belgian midfielder Arthur Vermeeren, having scouted him for a good part of 2023.

The Blaugrana even got a close look at the teenage midfielder when the two clubs met in the group stages of the UEFA Champions League.

While there was nothing advanced, it was suggested that the youngster’s name had come up in discussions during the lunch meeting between club executives.

Since then, it has been suggested that Vermeeren is not seen as a priority target, but is a player that remains on the La Liga champions’ agenda.

Atletico Madrid made contact for Vermeeren

Clubs like Arsenal and Manchester United had already been credited with an interest in Vermeeren in the recent past.

And now, Fabrizio Romano is reporting that Barcelona’s La Liga rivals, Atletico Madrid, have also entered the race to sign the Belgian midfield prospect.

As per the update, Los Rojiblancos have scouted Vermeeren on multiple occasions and have made contact to learn the conditions that would be needed to be met for his signing.

With no shortage of suitors, Vermeeren appears set for a big move either this month or in the summer. Whether Barcelona act on their interest or focus on other targets remains to be seen.
