Former Governor of Ekiti State, Kayode Fayemi, has shared his thoughts on Nigeria’s political history, following his attendance at the presentation of former military President Ibrahim Babangida’s autobiography, ‘A Journey in Service’.
Fayemi, a known pro-democracy activist, took to his LinkedIn account on Saturday to reflect on the significance of the memoir and its impact on national discourse.
“Given my long-standing role as a pro-democracy activist, attending the book launch of ‘A Journey in Service: An Autobiography of Ibrahim Babangida’ in Abuja was a moment of reflection”, Fayemi wrote.
He acknowledged that the book provides a window into Nigeria’s governance and political evolution, highlighting key moments that shaped the country’s democratic journey.
“General Babangida’s memoir offers insights into leadership, governance, and Nigeria’s political evolution, including defining moments that shaped our democratic struggles,” he stated.
Fayemi further emphasised the importance of documenting historical events, noting that while every era will be judged by history, preserving such experiences is essential for national growth.
“While history will continue to judge every era, documenting these experiences remains crucial for national learning and dialogue,” he added.
PUNCH Online reports that Fayemi recently celebrated his 60th birthday with the official launch of the Amandla Institute for Policy and Leadership Advancement.
Paying glowing tributes during his remarks at the event, President Bola Tinubu celebrated Fayemi, describing him as an enviable leader who has contributed immensely to the growth and development of the country.
In attendance were former Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon; ex-Senate President, Dr Bukola Saraki; Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa of Ondo; his counterpart in Ekiti, Biodun Oyebanji; Emir of Kano, Sanusi Lamido; the pioneer National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, John Odigie-Oyegun, former Minister of Finance, Kemi Adeosun among others.
Meanwhile, Babangida’s autobiography has sparked discussions across political circles, particularly on decisions made during his tenure, including the annulment of the June 12, 1993, presidential election.
One of such reaction came from Sadiq Abacha, son of the late military ruler General Sani Abacha, who on Saturday expressed admiration for his father.
Sadiq maintained that Abacha’s leadership remains significant despite persistent scrutiny and criticism.
