BAFTA Nominations: ‘Conclave’ & ‘Emilia Pérez’ Lead The Field As ‘Open’ Awards Race Takes Shape

The BAFTA nominations were revealed in London this morning with Papal thriller Conclave and crime-musical Emilia Pérez leading the way with 12 and 11 nominations, respectively. Scroll down for the full list of winners.

The Los Angeles wildfires have meant that most major U.S. awards ceremonies have postponed their nominations or extended voting periods, but BAFTA has ploughed on.

This morning’s nominations went largely to script, with movies The Brutalist, Anora, Wicked and A Complete Unknown also scoring well among nominees. British and Irish dramedy Kneecap also found favour with six nominations.

Best Film nominees comprise Anora, The Brutalist, A Complete Unknown, Conclave and Emilia Pérez. This year’s awards race has been described as an open one. Each of the five nominated BAFTA Best Film contenders does feel in with a shout of victory. But the race has also now coalesced around these five nominees, with musical Wicked also garnering attention, perhaps more so in the U.S.

The bookmakers have The Brutalist as an odds on favourite to win the Best Picture Oscar, and that film’s star Adrien Brody is odds on to win his second Best Actor Oscar.

Anora, The Brutalist, Conclave and Emilia Perez also scored best director nominations this morning for Sean Baker, Brady Corbet, Edward Berger and Jacques Audiard. They are joined in the category by Dune: Part Two director Denis Villeneuve and The Substance filmmaker Carolie Fargeat.

Dune: Part Two received seven nominations today, while Gothic thriller Nosferatu scored five after not getting one at the Golden Globes. Both did particularly well in the technical and craft categories.

Leading actress nominees for BAFTA comprise Cynthia Erivo, Karla Sofia Gascon, Marianne Jean-Baptiste, Mikey Madison, Demi Moore and Saoirse Ronan, while the Best Actor nominees are Adrien Brody, Timothee Chalamet, Colman Domingo, Ralph Fiennes, Hugh Grant and Sebastian Stan. Grant scored his fourth BAFTA Film nomination today for his performance in Heretic, thirty years after getting his first nod for Four Weddings And A Funeral.

Bookmakers have Demi Moore and Mikey Madison as neck and neck in their odds for the Best Actress Oscar. Moore recently won a Golden Globe. I’m Still Here star Fernanda Torres, also a Golden Globe winner, didn’t get a nomination today, which has surprised some.

Other British films to find favour among BAFTA voters include Blitz with three nominations, The Outrun with three nominations and Hard Truths with two.

The hotly contested Film Not In The English Language category saw nominations for All We Imagine As Light, Emilia Perez, I’m Still Here, Kneecap and The Seed Of The Sacred Fig.

This year saw the introduction for the first time by BAFTA of a Children’s And Family Film category. Nominees are Flow, Kensuke’s Kingdom, Wallace And Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl and The Wild Robot.

Among those movies shut out this morning were Luca Guadagnino films Queer and Challengers, both of which previously scored Golden Globe nominations for their stars Daniel Craig and Zendaya, respectively.

BAFTA comprises more than 8,000 film voters across more than 50 countries.
