Earlier today, we reported that Barcelona defensive gem Pau Cubarsi has found himself an admirer in Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola.

The 17-year-old made his senior debut only last week, coming on as a half-time substitute against Unionistas de Salamanca in Copa del Rey. It was followed by a starting appearance in La Liga against Real Betis.

While he is only making his breakthrough in the first-team scene, Guardiola and Manchester City are believed to be following Cubarsi’s development very closely.

Cubarsi’s release clause stands at €15 million

Amidst this, journalist Santi Ovalle has provided details about Cubarsi’s contract at Barcelona and the release clause that exists in the deal.

Barça shielded Cubarsi with a new contract in the summer of 2023, a few months after he turned 16 years old.

The teenage defensive prodigy signed a three-year deal that runs until the summer of 2026, but has a lowly release clause amount set at around just €10-15 million, claims Ovalle.

If true, that sum is unlikely to dissuade a club like Manchester City from trying to poach Cubarsi – a player that is seen as the future of the Spanish national team’s defence.

In the past, Barça have lost top talents from the academy to other clubs – some of the most notable ones being Cesc Fabregas, Gerard Pique, and Eric Garcia.

The Catalans are eager to avoid such a situation with Cubarsi as well. And with Guardiola keeping tabs on the youngster, there may be a possibility that the 17-year-old is handed a new contract, one with an improved release clause so as to stave off any suitors.
