Inaki Pena’s future at Barcelona beyond 2026 remains uncertain. The goalkeeper had established himself as a starter in goal following Marc-Andre ter Stegen’s injury, but Hansi Flick opted to hand the role to Wojciech Szczesny last month.
This has seemingly created a tense situation as far as Pena’s continuity is concerned. Indeed, despite previously being scheduled for contract discussions this February, Pena’s renewal is now up in the air, as reported by Mundo Deportivo.
Contract talks on hold
Pena’s contract with Barcelona expires at the end of the 2025/26 season, and the club had initially planned to begin negotiations this month, following a series of recent renewals, including that of Pau Cubarsi.
However, following recent developments, the Catalans have not confirmed whether a meeting will take place, despite earlier intentions to extend his deal.

In the meantime, club sources state that Pena continues to train at full intensity, maintaining the same professionalism and commitment as if he were the first-choice goalkeeper. His dedication is widely recognised by teammates and staff alike.
Tension between player and coach
As for the situation in the dressing room, Flick and Pena have had multiple discussions, but beyond the tactical decisions, it is the handling of the situation that has caused tension.
The goalkeeper’s benching in favour of Szczesny has led to some tense conversations between the manager and the player, especially given that Pena feels he was not given a proper explanation for the decision.
Initially positioned as Ter Stegen’s understudy, Pena now finds himself Szczesny, who could even decide to continue beyond the season, which could further cast the academy graduate’s future under major doubt.
With contract discussions now up in the air and Pena’s playing time reduced, his long-term place at Barcelona is far from secure.
