The financial situation at Barcelona has led to a recurring scenario of the club taking an interest in a player in the market but being unable to compete with other teams with greater economic firepower.

Given the circumstances, Barça are not in the best position to meet lofty transfer fee demands nor are they able to offer hefty contracts to players.

And, it appears that because of it, the reigning La Liga champions are now set to be ruled out of the race to sign another key midfield target.

Bruno Guimaraes’ deal almost impossible for Barcelona

Indeed, as per Joaquim Piera of SPORT, Barcelona are now pretty much out of contention to sign Newcastle United midfielder Bruno Guimaraes.

It was reported not long ago that the Blaugrana were very interested in signing the 26-year-old Brazilian international in the summer and would even consider the possibility of a player-plus-cash deal or selling players to generate income and fund a move for him.

However, as per the aforementioned report, Guimaraes is not prepared to wait for Barcelona until they resolve their financial situation and come calling.

It is stated that the 26-year-old is unhappy at Newcastle United due to their lack of competitiveness this season. Furthermore, the club could face FFP sanctions, leading them to think about high-profile sales, opening the door for Guimaraes’ exit.

PSG likely destination?

The report further states that PSG have already gotten to work on the operation to sign Guimaraes and that is where the midfielder could end up.

The Newcastle United star’s agent, Giuliano Bertolucci, has been in Paris for a week to tie up the deal for Gabriel Moscardo, another of Barcelona’s targets, and PSG are using it to make inroads on the Guimaraes deal as well.

The 26-year-old has a release clause worth €116 million, but the report states that the deal could be worth around €100 million, with PSG wanting to make him their next marquee addition in their bid to win the UEFA Champions League.

Even if Guimaraes does not leave for Paris in this transfer window, his possible move to Barça next summer seems, in the current economic and financial reality, to be almost impossible.

For starters, the former Lyon man earns €9.87 million per season and the club would have to make some serious adjustments to raise €100 million for his signing.
