In light of Barcelona’s growing tension with Nike surrounding their kit sponsorship deal, the two parties, earlier this week, had decided to hold an important meeting.
The Nike officials met the Barcelona representatives, led by President Joan Laporta and vice-president Rafa Yuste, in a popular restaurant in Barcelona.
The agenda of the meeting from Nike was to sort out the differences between the two parties and convince Barça to agree to the company’s newer terms.
Barcelona – Nike deal on the verge of collapse
However, as reported by Onze TV3 (h/t FCB World), the said meeting between Barcelona and Nike representatives did not go well.
The two parties failed to reach their desired agreement, perhaps because of the sheer differences both entities have, in regard to their expectations from this deal.
Barcelona, for their part, have always maintained that the club are not paid handsomely by Nike. Joan Laporta had even conveyed the same message publicly.
In light of this failed meeting, Onze reports that the Barcelona – Nike deal could be on the verge of a collapse.
What’s next?
Terminating the Nike contract, which does not expire until 2028, will not be a straightforward task for Barcelona.
The Catalans have two options – serve a notice period and then terminate the contract without paying any fees or pay a ‘profit-making’ fee to Nike and revoke the deal immediately.
It must be noted that Puma are waiting on the wings and are reportedly prepared to offer Barcelona a fortune.
One thing is for certain – this entire process could take a bit of time and it won’t be until the coming summer, when he come to a certain conclusion over this Barcelona – Nike saga.
