Despite Barcelona evaluating an abundance of successors after Xavi Hernandez dropped the bombshell news of his resignation, it was ultimately Xavi himself who chose to remain in his position.
Aware of the manager’s understanding of the inner workings and culture of the club, the board was keen on continuing with Xavi.
However, recent form has shown that the coach is struggling to keep Barcelona afloat in this challenging period.
And his recent statements have not helped either, causing tension between him and the club’s hierarchy.
Barcelona unhappy with Xavi’s statements
Ahead of the game against Almeria, Xavi did not shy away from addressing the Catalans’ woes on the economic front, claiming:
“Now we are not in the same conditions with clubs with better fair play. The fan should know. It doesn’t mean that we don’t try to achieve the goals.”
According to El Chiringuito TV, these statements have not gone down well with the Barcelona board.
Indeed, directors believe that a Barcelona coach should not be voicing such thoughts publicly, especially with the media known to nitpick at every given opportunity.
The board’s dissatisfaction has nothing to do with the recent results, but rather with the blunt sentiments Xavi has conveyed to the media.
Future could be affected
Reports have previously claimed that Xavi’s tenure at Barcelona could be at risk if the team fails to secure a spot in the Spanish Super Cup next season.
The Catalans will need to win their remaining 3 games to ensure a top-two finish in La Liga.
But apart from that, it looks like the 44-year-old’s words in the media could also harm his prospects of staying on the Barcelona bench.
