Joao Felix has continued to divide opinions since arriving at FC Barcelona, on loan from Atletico Madrid during the summer transfer window.

The 24-year-old Portuguese international enjoyed a fine start under Xavi Hernandez but soon became plagued by inconsistency, which resulted in him losing his place in the starting XI as well at the turn of the year.

But the stance from the club regarding the player has always been clear, they will look to keep the forward around beyond the ongoing season.

Atletico Madrid want €70-80 million

It must be remembered that there is no buy option inserted in the loan agreement between Barcelona and Atletico Madrid for Joao Felix. On top of that, prior to landing in Catalonia, the attacker extended his contract with the Rojiblancos for a couple of years until 2027.

So, there will need to be fresh negotiations over his continuity. And, Luis F Rojo of MARCA is claiming that Atletico Madrid are demanding a sum of €70-80 million to sell Joao Felix permanently to Barcelona.

That is a major problem for Barça given their financial situation and they are in no position to meet those demands. As such, the idea is for the Catalan giants to seek another loan deal for the former SL Benfica wonderkid from Diego Simeone’s side.

Another reason why Barcelona do not intend to spend big on Joao Felix as that they have Ferran Torres as a fixed option on the left flank and there is a possibility of Ansu Fati returning and staying next season, which could lead to overbooking in the position.

The player, for his part, wants to continue and Barcelona, too, are eager to prolong their relationship, but it can only be done on a loan deal, something that does not appeal to Atletico Madrid, who want to sell and bring in profits.

So, only time will tell how things evolve and whether Joao Felix remains at Barcelona come next season.
