Barcelona lost to Girona away from home dramatically after going 1-2 up by half-time, as Portu’s second-half substitution completely changed things for the better for the hosts.

And while the direct impact of this defeat falls to Barcelona, who are now trailing Girona in the league and at the risk of missing out on the Spanish Super Cup next season, the collateral damage was that Real Madrid officially won La Liga tonight itself.

The Madrid outfit needed just one win in their next four games to seal the trophy after their 0-3 win against Cadiz tonight, and were gifted the title early courtesy of Barcelona themselves.

Following the win, as is tradition, Barcelona tweeted a congratulatory message to Madrid, reading, “Congratulations to Real Madrid for winning the league title.”

This number included eight goals conceded to Girona, eight to Villarreal, and five to Real Madrid across two games each.

Xavi and Barcelona will need to step up their game massively next season if they want to return to the top of the hill and compete against the very best in Europe next season.
