Aleix Garcia’s name has been associated with FC Barcelona since the start of the January transfer window.

The Girona midfielder was one of the club’s top targets in the winter transfer window, but the move did not materialize. The club, instead, are now targeting him in the coming summer.

While Aleix Garcia was initially targeted as an alternative for Pedri and Gavi, it appears the Spaniard may have a bigger role to play in the coming season.

Barça consider Garcia as de Jong replacement

According to a recent report from SPORT, Barcelona are considering Aleix Garcia as the ideal replacement for Frenkie de Jong, in case they end up selling the Dutchman this summer.

There is certainly no shortage of suitors for de Jong, with Manchester United and Paris Saint-Germain reportedly keen on his services. The player, for his part, is open to listening to offers at the end of the season.

With de Jong’s future in question, Barcelona have started scouring the market for potential replacements. But in Aleix Garcia, the club have an option who is already well-vetted and has experience in La Liga.

The 26-year-old has been one of Girona’s top performers this season, impressing onlookers with his technical ability and versatility in the middle of the park.

Garcia’s performances have played a key role in helping Girona put up a surprising fight for the league title, with the Catalan club trailing Real Madrid by just six points.

A cost-effective option

What makes Garcia a particularly intriguing option for Barcelona is the player’s relatively low price tag.

The Girona midfielder reportedly has a release clause worth €15 million, which makes him an excellent cost-effective option, in Barça’s bid to replace de Jong.

The Catalans may not even have to pay the full release clause, as Girona might also be open to receiving Pablo Torre as part of a player-plus-cash deal.
