Due to the stellar Euro 2024 campaign Nico Williams enjoyed and the interest he has drawn from all over Europe, Barcelona have made signing the Basque winger a priority operation.

Nicos’ suitability in the squad and his chemistry with other Barcelona teammates in the Spanish national team have further incentivized the club to deem him an essential addition to their roster.

Apart from prioritizing his signature, the Catalan giants have not forgotten about their most vulnerable area in the squad: the defensive midfield position.

As part of their strategy, they have shortlisted several candidates, among them Real Sociedad’s midfield enforcer Mikel Merino.

Barcelona will try to lower Merino’s cost by offering a centre-back

According to SPORT, although no formal offer has been made, Merino’s team is aware of Barça’s interest.

Atletico Madrid and Arsenal are also interested, but a decision over his future is expected towards the end of the transfer window as he enjoys his vacation as a European Champion.

Furthermore, the report adds that following Robin Le Normand’s exit, Real Sociedad seeks a centre-back, and Barça have numerous options in that position.

With Mikel Merino entering the final year of his contract, La Real are not in a position to demand a high transfer sum.

As such, the inclusion of a central defender could allow Barça to negotiate a more favourable deal, potentially lowering the fixed costs of an operation expected to exceed €25 million.

Who could Barcelona offer in exchange?

Clement Lenglet, Eric Garcia, Inigo Martinez, and Mika Faye are seen as disposable players in Barcelona’s back line and could enter a trade deal.

Their experience in Spanish football makes them appealing to Real Sociedad, offering various profiles that could meet the team’s specific needs.

Lenglet’s high salary is a concern for Real Sociedad, who may find it challenging to afford. The futures of Eric Garcia, Inigo Martinez, and Mika Faye at Barça remain uncertain, but the club believes they could also pique Sociedad’s interest.

Additionally, Pablo Torre’s name has been mentioned as a potential option for the San Sebastian team. However, his recent injury complicates matters.
