As we approach the transfer deadline day of the ongoing January market, Barcelona are looking to finalise their targets for the summer ahead.

The club wanted to bring in players in January, but they are not in a position to finance deals for any new players. As such, the Blaugrana are largely targeting players for the summer, including Spanish fullback Sergi Cardona.

Barcelona wanted Jorginho in January

However, Spanish journalist Lluis Miguelsanz (h/t Diario SPORT) has revealed that Barcelona did wish to sign Jorginho in this January transfer window.

The club were serious about signing a new midfielder this month, with the Arsenal star emerging as the ideal candidate due to his experience and composure.

Jorginho would indeed have been an excellent replacement for Sergio Busquets owing to his style of play. He would have also become an upgrade over Oriol Romeu.

After joining Arsenal about a year ago, the Italian has endured a difficult season so far. He has struggled with a lack of game-time when his contract expires at the end of the season.

No agreement reached

The report adds that Barcelona wanted Jorginho to terminate his contract with Arsenal in January, almost in the same fashion as Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang did in the past.

The Italian was keen on joining Barcelona on a free transfer. But the move did not materialise as the player failed to reach an agreement with Arsenal.

Barcelona, for their part, were also struggling economically and were not in a position to afford Jorginho’s wages. Jorginho, as a result, remains at Arsenal and will only leave Emirates at the end of the season.
