Pau Cubarsi made his first team debut for Barcelona yesterday during the Copa del Rey Round of 16 clash against Unionistas.

The 16-year-old central defender was introduced during the half-time, replacing Andreas Christensen and it is safe to say he had a positive impact in the game.

The 16-year-old defender demonstrated composure while in possession of the ball and showed a strong defensive presence when required.

Despite receiving a yellow card, he remained firm on the field during the two crucial goals that pushed the team into the quarterfinals of the competition.

Numbers speak volume

Cubarsi played a crucial role in Barcelona’s ball distribution, which happens to be one of his standout qualities. He successfully completed 56 accurate passes out of the attempted 60.

Additionally, he remained vigilant to the movements of the opposition forwards as he effectively prevented potential threats during the match.

Notably, the young defender played a pivotal role in setting up Jules Kounde’s impressive goal, contributing to the 1-2 scoreline. An assist on his first-team debut for a central defender speaks volume.

Defensive solidity

Cubarsi also showcased a commendable display in defence, contributing two masterful tackles, a well-executed block, a successful ball recovery, and committing just one foul among his 65 interventions in the second half against Unionistas.

Within the Barcelona ranks, there is considerable optimism regarding his potential to become a key figure in the club’s future and his performance yesterday marked the initial step toward securing more opportunities with the first team.

Given the troubles Barcelona are facing in defence, he might as well get more opportunities to showcase his talent if not in La Liga, then at least in Copa del Rey.

The report within the club management concerning Cubarsi is such that he is known for getting the ball forward out of defence and he does so with sheer elegance.

Considering the fact that he idolises Carles Puyol, it comes as no surprise that he has some traits of the former Barcelona captain.
