Barcelona will be one of the most active clubs in the upcoming summer transfer window, for they not only dream big in terms of acquisitions but are also under pressure to make big sales.
While there is still no clarity about the players who will leave, there is a decent understanding of the positions the Blaugranas wish to reinforce. The defensive midfield, on that front, is the number one priority.
Common target
As revealed in a recent report by Mundo Deportivo, the club’s sporting director Deco and manager Xavi have met and are clear that the pivot is the most important position to strengthen this summer.
Of the various options on their table, however, Joshua Kimmich has emerged as the management’s preferred option as they value the 29-year-old’s experience, versatility, physicality and technical ability.
Kimmich, over the years, has proven to be an able candidate not only in the defensive midfield position but also playing as a full-back. In that sense, his signing would kill two birds with one stone for the Catalans.
Xavi has spoken with the player several times, most recently in the last summer window, and it is clear that Kimmich sees a move to Barcelona with good eyes.
A decision to make
The 29-year-old has one year left on his contract with Bayern Munich and the Bavarians are pushing to renew his deal. After all, he is one of the team’s captains and pillars on the field.
The ball, thus, is in Kimmich’s park. On one side, he can continue with his current employers and await the potential arrival of Ralf Ragnick in June, a manager he deeply appreciates.
His other option can be triggered by refusing a renewal and forcing Bayern to sell him to Barcelona, where he can work with Xavi, the player whom he has openly claimed to be his idol.
In any case, the player wishes to clear his dilemma and make a decision before the start of the European Championships on June 14.
