Following Xavi Hernandez’s announcement that he would leaving Barcelona at the end of the season, the club have already launched an extensive search for his replacement.
Names like Jurgen Klopp, Imanol Alguacil, Thiago Motta, and even former boss Frank Rijkaard, have been bandied about as potential options.
But one name that appears to be the most prominently linked to the Barça job is that of record-breaking former Bayern Munich boss Hansi Flick.
The 58-year-old has been without a job since September last year after being sacked from his role as the manager of the Germany national team. And, he seemingly is one of the top contenders to replace Xavi at Barcelona.
Barcelona director Deco contacts Flick
Indeed, now journalist Christian Falk (via Caught Offside) is reporting that Barcelona sporting director Deco has already contacted Hansi Flick to let him know about the club’s interest in acquiring his services.
As per the update, Deco has been in touch with the 58-year-old manager on behalf of Barça president Joan Laporta to signal the interest on their part in hiring him to replace Xavi.
Flick has been made aware that he is one among the managerial candidates that the La Liga champions are considering to take over from Xavi for next season.
Flick enjoyed a sensational start to his senior managerial career as he won the treble – Bundesliga, DFB Pokal, and the UEFA Champions League – in his debut season as the head coach of the Bayern Munich side in 2019/20.
Not long after, he added the DFB Super Cup, the UEFA Super Cup, and the FIFA Club World Cup to his cabinet, in the process, going on to complete a historic sextuple in eight months.
Flick’s stint with Germany was not so memorable and he was relieved of his duties in September last year. With contacts established, it will be interesting to see if he makes his way to Barcelona come summer.
