Barcelona’s recent midfield developments, as reported by SPORT, highlight a major shift in strategy.
During the summer transfer window, sporting director Deco and manager Hansi Flick had planned to bring in a strong defensive midfielder.
However, everything changed soon after Flick decided to test out young talents Marc Casado and Marc Bernal during the club’s pre-season tour in the United States.
Over the months of June, July, and August, Barcelona explored various midfield options. Deco and Flick had given their approval for the addition of a defensive presence in midfield, aiming to add physicality and depth to the squad.
Several names were explored
As part of this plan, Barça pursued players like Amadou Onana and later Mikel Merino. Onana ultimately joined Aston Villa, and while Merino became a target, registration issues hindered further negotiations.
The club’s hands were tied as financial limitations prevented them from finalising any deals for a new pivot. With these complications, Flick turned his attention to the players already in his squad.

Casado has earned his place
Casado, however, seized his chance, demonstrating a remarkable competitive edge. His consistent performances eventually earned him a regular starting position, and there is even talk of his potential future involvement with the senior Spanish national team.
What initially seemed like a setback for Barcelona turned into a pleasant surprise, as Casado quickly established himself as a reliable option in the midfield.
Now, with Frenkie de Jong, Gavi, and other midfielders set to return from injuries, Barcelona find themselves with a well-stocked midfield.
The abundance of options has effectively ended any plans to bring in a new defensive midfielder. Casado’s emergence has filled the need in that role, and the squad feels complete in this area.
