Barcelona have been keeping tabs on a plethora of young talents coming through in the European and South American markets in recent times.
Having signed the likes of Vitor Roque, Noah Darvich, and Mika Faye, the Catalans are working to secure the services of Estevao Willian from Palmeiras, while closing in on the capture of Swedish talent Lucas Bergvall from Djurgardens.
Jose Melro on Barcelona’s radar
As it happens, Barcelona have set their sights on another up-and-coming young footballer in the form of Jose Melro of SL Benfica, reports MARCA.
Melro, 19, is a versatile attacker who came through the ranks at Santarem before moving to Benfica’s Under-23 setup in 2022.
Known for his predator’s mentality and an admirable goalscoring average, the teenage prospect is making a name for himself at Benfica and his performances are attracting the attention of clubs like Barcelona, who target young talents.
Melro has been likened to on-loan Barça forward Joao Felix in Portugal, with the forward being capable of playing as a second striker or on the flanks. In 11 matches for Benfica’s U-23 side this term, he has netted eight goals and set up one more.
Contract expires in 2025
As per the report, Barcelona have been collecting information on young Jose Melro and are aware that his contract expires in 2025, which makes him an attractive prospect for the summer window.
Melro is yet to make his senior debut for Benfica and the club might be forced to move quickly for the 19-year-old for his value could increase after he breaks into the first-team setup.
This is his second season with Benfica U-23 and the idea is for him to join Benfica II, with whom he is already training.
Barcelona are clear that this is a hugely attractive option, a market opportunity not to be missed.
