Real Madrid’s 3-2 win over UD Almeria last evening at the Santiago Bernabeu has cast the refereeing standards in La Liga in a very bad light.

As many as three very controversial calls were made by the match official and the VAR during the game, all of them in the second when Real Madrid were trailing by two goals and all of them in favour of the Merengues.

A dodgy penalty call went in their favour before Almeria had a goal chalked off and then Vinicius Jr. had a goal given despite obvious hints of handball.

Barcelona manager Xavi Hernandez gave his two cents about the matter last night in his post-match press conference.

“Everyone saw the refereeing in the Real Madrid – Almería match. After our first match this season, I already told you that it was going to be incredibly difficult to win La Liga this season. I stand by those words,” said Xavi.

Barcelona furious with Real Madrid favouritism, concerned about refereeing

Now, SPORT is reporting that even though Barcelona, as an institution, maintained silence on the matter after what went down last evening, they are absolutely fuming about the refereeing situation and how things seem to favour Real Madrid.

The anger at Barça is huge, and there is great concern about what could happen in the coming weeks, although for now no public measures will be taken.

For now, the Blaugrana hope that there will be no more scandals and that the VAR’s decisions will be fair, and will step forward if things get complicated in the decisive phase of the championship.

The coach’s words about the refereeing are absolutely shared by the whole club. They are clear that Real Madrid are putting a lot of pressure on referees and this has paid off with controversial decisions going in their favour.

Barça president Joan Laporta has not made any public statements for some time now. Neither after the Super Cup nor after this scandalous matchday.

Barcelona’s relationship with the referees is absolutely normal. As it is with the Spanish Federation. That does not detract from the fact that the club, internally, has shown its anger.

But for now, the Catalans wish to focus on themselves and getting their season back on track, with the win against Real Betis seen as a turning point.
