Earlier this week, Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong lashed out at Spanish media for allegedly spreading ‘lies’ about his salary at the club and his future.

There has been a lot of talk surrounding the midfielder and his future in recent weeks, with Barça needing at least one big sale in the summer as they hope to reach the 1:1 rule.

De Jong, given his high salary, and the number of clubs interested, was said to be one of the players who could be offloaded.

Frustrated by all the speculations and rumours, De Jong exploded in a press conference earlier this week, saying:

“My future? The truth is that I’m a bit pissed off with what you people [journalists] write in general! A lot of things are coming out that are not true, it’s irritating me. Everything that is said in the media about my salary and my future are lies.

Barcelona intend to renew

De Jong made it clear in the same press conference that he intends to stay at Barcelona for a long time.

“What you say about my salary is very far from reality. Figures have been invented that are not true. I am really happy here. Barcelona was and is the club of my life, it was my dream to play here and it still is, he said.

And it so happens that Barcelona too share the same stance when it comes to the future of the Netherlands international.

Indeed, as per Adrian Sanchez, Barça intend to renew De Jong’s contract and have no plans to offload him in the summer transfer window.

The 26-year-old’s contract with the Catalans runs until the summer of 2026 and the idea is to prolong his stay further, albeit with an adjusted salary, keeping in mind the club’s economic condition.

President Joan Laporta is said to be a huge admirer of the former AFC Ajax midfielder and as such the club will continue to work towards renewing his contract.

Meeting held with agent

In fact, earlier today, Barcelona director Deco met with De Jong’s agent, Ali Dursun, to provide assurance and support to him after his recent media outburst.

It was suggested that the feelings emerging from the meeting were positive and building on that, Adrian Sanchez reports that there is indeed good harmony between the club and the midfielder’s camp and they do not wish to harm that.

It was conveyed to De Jong’s entourage that Barcelona completely trust him and there will be a meeting held in the future between the club and his representative to further the renewal discussions.
