Barcelona’s defender Inigo Martinez is expected to start on the bench in the upcoming match against Alaves, despite being fully fit after recovering from a leg injury, according to reports from MARCA

It is said that Martinez has returned to full fitness following a tear in the femoral biceps of his right leg, an injury he sustained during the Spanish Super Cup final on January 12.

Before his injury, Martinez had been a key figure in Barcelona’s defence, regularly partnering with Pau Cubarsi at the heart of the backline.

However, with his return, the competition for a starting spot is intensifying, as Martinez now finds himself competing with Ronald Araujo for the central defensive position.

What about his playing time?

Coach Hansi Flick, known for his cautious approach when reintegrating players returning from injury, is likely to ease Martinez back into the starting lineup.

It is common for Flick to gradually reintroduce his players after an injury layoff, and as a result, Araujo and Cubarsi are expected to start against Alaves, with Martinez likely to begin the match on the bench.

Although Eric Garcia is another option for the backline, Flick also considers him a potential choice for the midfield, which makes Garcia less likely to feature in defence.

A battle worth watching

The battle between Martinez and Araujo for a starting spot will be one of the key storylines for Barcelona in the second half of the season.

Prior to his injury, Martinez had been performing at a high level, having played in 27 matches across all competitions.

While Araujo has proven to be a solid defender for Barcelona, Martinez’s experience and form before his injury give him an edge in the competition for the starting role.

As Barcelona continue their campaign, the defensive choices made by Flick will be critical in determining the club’s success.

With Martinez’s return and the ongoing competition for spots, it will be interesting to see how Barcelona’s defensive lineup evolves in the coming weeks.
