The 2022 summer transfer window might be repeating itself for Frenkie de Jong, as rumours suggest he could be on his way out of Barcelona once more.
After a difficult season, Barcelona are in dire need of funds from player sales, and this has given rise to the possibility of De Jong being used as a sacrificial lamb to overcome the financial crisis.
In addition to the fact that he maintains a hefty price tag, the midfielder’s salary will skyrocket next season, which has worried the Barcelona higher-ups.
De Jong intent on staying put
Now, SPORT have reported that Barcelona’s goal is to ensure Frenkie de Jong’s continuity.
Still, if a deal to renew his contract on lower salary terms cannot be agreed upon, Barcelona may consider serious proposals.
If the Dutchman becomes available, a number of teams are interested in him, including PSG and Manchester United.
De Jong, whose contract with Barça expires in 2026, is not planning on leaving anytime soon, though.
The Netherlands international declined more lucrative offers to stay in Barcelona, including one from PSG, because he is well-settled in Catalonia and intends to keep donning the Blaugrana shirt.
Frenkie’s sale will be needed to sign Bernardo Silva
Barcelona have reportedly been avid admirers of Bernardo Silva and his name continues to be heavily linked with the Catalan giants.
But for his signing to materialize, it has been reported that Barça will have to carry out the sale of Frenkie de Jong.
De Jong is the only player whose sale would provide the required financial relief for them to be able to afford Silva’s deal without going beyond their financial means.
Consequently, it is yet to be determined how De Jong’s story will unfold and whether Barcelona will commit to keeping him or explore other options like Bernardo.
