The future of Frenkie de Jong is once again going to be a hot topic at Barcelona as the club prepare for a squad overhaul in the coming summer.

De Jong has emerged as one of Barcelona’s most consistent performers in the recent past, which is why the club offered a renewal to the player earlier in the year.

However, de Jong is yet to respond to the contract offer as of yet, even as uncertainty kicks in over his long-term future at Camp Nou.

De Jong’s plan at Barcelona

A recent report from MARCA has offered a comprehensive update on the future of Frenkie de Jong, suggesting that the midfielder has a plan to wear out Barcelona.

As mentioned earlier, Barça had proposed a contract extension to de Jong, which included a three-year extension to his current deal, but did not include any wage hikes as the Dutchman is already one of the highest-paid members in the team.

As per the report, de Jong is more than happy to delay his response to the contract extension, knowing he has time on his side.

In fact, the Dutchman’s ulterior motive is to not renew the contract at all and wait further. It must be noted the midfielder is set to earn €44 million in the next two years at Barcelona.

Keeping that in mind, de Jong would ideally wait until 2025, when he will be in a position to put more pressure on Barcelona to either extend his contract or sell him for a cut-price deal.

De Jong is also aware of the fact that his ongoing injury could impact the proposals coming in from Europe. As such, the midfielder has no problems further stalling his renewal process.

The Dutchman, though, is hopeful of recovering in time and representing the Netherlands in the European Championship.
