The entire narrative surrounding Frenkie de Jong’s continuity at Barcelona is beginning to take an ugly turn, as a report from SPORT has emerged that while the midfielder wants to stay in Catalonia, he wants to do so under his terms.

In fact, the aforementioned outlet affirms that Barcelona sent their contract proposal to De Jong in October last year and yet, the player has not gotten back with an answer despite the fact that he does not want to leave this summer.

What’s going on with De Jong?

It goes without saying that De Jong’s immediate future at Barcelona is uncertain. Despite having had the option to depart the club in the summer of 2022, the Dutch midfielder resisted the pressure. Fast forward two years and his case has now been reopened.

Currently under contract with Barcelona until 2026, the midfielder holds the distinction of being the most expensive player for the club. This includes his salary and additional amounts deferred during the COVID-19 pandemic.

In recent weeks, Barcelona have expressed their intention to extend the midfielder’s contract. However, this extension is not anticipated to come with any economic enhancements as the club perceives this adjustment as crucial to their ongoing efforts to reduce the salary burden of the first team.

De Jong wants his conditions

Barça offered to extend De Jong’s contract last October, but he has not given an answer yet. The club wants to keep him because he’s important to the team, but as reported before, they would be willing to sell him if he decides not to renew.

The reason why he has not responded is because he is considering his options. He likes the idea of staying at Barça but does not want to accept reduced terms on his new deal. He is not in a hurry because he still has more than two years left on his current contract.

And now, before deciding on his continuity, the Dutchman also wants to know who the next coach will be and their plans for him. The past disagreement with the club’s management has left some tension, and it remains to be seen how the negotiations will unfold.
