Barcelona midfielder Oriol Romeu has openly acknowledged that his season has not gone as well as he had hoped and despite his best efforts and determination, he feels that he has not reached the level of performance he aimed for.

“It has not been a good season and the level has not been the one I wanted,” admitted the midfielder as quoted by Mundo Deportivo.

Romeu joined Barcelona last summer with high hopes, especially as he was seen as a potential replacement for the legendary Sergio Busquets.

At first, things looked promising as Romeu started the season strong. However, as time went on, his performance dipped, and he eventually lost his spot in the starting lineup.

Given these circumstances, there are strong indications that Romeu might not stay with Barcelona beyond the upcoming summer transfer window, with Girona keen on retaining his services.

Romeu not certain about his future

Discussing his uncertain future, Romeu admitted that he is unsure whether he will remain with Barcelona or move to another club this summer.

He emphasised that as players grow older, their priorities shift towards enjoying their time on the field, which is something he values highly for the next year.

“When you get older you want to enjoy on the pitch and that is the priority for next year,” he said.

Despite this uncertainty, he reminded everyone that he still has two years left on his contract with Barcelona.

Will Romeu play under Flick?

Romeu also pointed out that whenever a new coach joins a team, it often leads to changes and new developments.

He mentioned that it is important to wait and see what the club decides and what the intentions of everyone involved are before making any decisions.

This comment was in reference to the departure of Xavi and the arrival of Hansi Flick as the new coach.

“When a new coach comes in there are always movements and there are always new developments and we have to wait to see what the club says and the intentions of each one to choose the best.”

Lastly, when asked about Girona, Romeu had nothing but praise for Michel’s squad. He congratulated them by saying, “It has been a joy to watch the team.”
