Nico Williams is the top transfer target for FC Barcelona this summer window as the Catalan giants look to rope in a new left-winger.

The 21-year-old Athletic Club and Spain winger has been on the Catalans’ radars since last year but finances meant that a move was seen as doubtful.

But earlier today, Barça president, Joan Laporta, confirmed that the club have the financial wherewithal to pull off the deal this summer.

Barcelona in talks with Nico’s entourage

Building on that, journalist Alex Pintanel reports that Barcelona are already in talks with the entourage of Nico Williams to explain their plan to sign him and discuss the club’s contract proposal.

Barça have sent a footballing plan to Nico’s entourage with an exponential increase in his salary if he plays a minimum number of games (a clause that is easy to fulfil), bearing in mind that Chelsea would offer him double what he earns at Athletic.

Barcelona are aware that they will not be able to compete financially with any big European club, but they also know that the player would be happy to wear the blue and white shirt and play alongside his good friend Lamine Yamal.

While the figures are not yet clear due to the club not knowing their salary limit, the idea is for them to fix a salary, which can be increased in a simple way if a certain number of games specified in the contract are completed.

Barcelona know what needs to be done

“For the president and Deco, the signing of Nico is a priority,” sources say from the club. “He wants him for sure,” they add.

Barcelona already know what they need to do to sign Nico. Laporta is aware of this, and that is why he has made such strong statements about the winger

In order to sign Nico and pay his release clause of €58 million, plus tax, Barça must plug the hole of the unpaid €40 million from Libero, return to the 1:1 rule as soon as possible, recover the guarantee of €12 million that some of the directors put up last summer and sell a star player.
