Barcelona outcast set to be given a chance to convince Hansi Flick in pre-season

Barcelona’s compromising financial state meant they were not able to splash big on a defensive midfield signing last summer, despite bidding Sergio Busquets farewell.

As such, they settled for the low-cost option of Oriol Romeu, who arrived for a meager fee of €3 million from Girona.

While he got off to an excellent start, with promising exhibitions in the pre-season tour and a few solid displays in La Liga, he quickly began to lose steam.

Gradually, Romeu became an afterthought in the squad and lost his place in the team. Failing to recover from his dip in form, an exit this summer has been taken for granted.

However, the veteran midfielder faces an uncertain future and is not as close to a departure as was initially foreseen.

Oriol Romeu stays for now

Indeed, according to MARCA, Oriol Romeu will stay at Barcelona for the next few weeks, despite expectations of a quick departure. Hansi Flick plans to observe him closely before making a decision.

Romeu will therefore begin practicing with the first team on Wednesday and travel with Barcelona to the United States at the end of July and the beginning of August.

Prior to making a decision, Flick will assess his level of performance in the games against AC Milan, Real Madrid, and Manchester City.

With several midfielders sidelined — Pedri injured, Gavi injured, and uncertainty around Frenkie de Jong, and Fermin Lopez at the Olympics — Oriol Romeu’s continuity is being contemplated.

Meeting with his agent took place earlier today

Magico Diaz, the agent representing Pau Victor and Oriol Romeu, met Barcelona sporting director Deco to discuss their futures today.

Diaz was informed that for the time being, nothing is certain. But the player has the chance to convince Flick that he merits a place on the squad.

That said, Pau Victor’s future also hangs in the balance, with talks of a potential swap deal between him and Romeu with Girona this summer.

The unfolding events will reveal how things pan out, but for now, Romeu has an opportunity to turn his situation around.
