With merely three months remaining until the season reaches its inevitable closure, Barcelona are pressed to quickly identify Xavi’s successor.
Searching far and wide for elite managers who can raise Barcelona’s bar, the Catalan giants have shortlisted a few candidates who appeal to them the most.
Brighton & Hove Albion’s Roberto De Zerbi is one such name that has entered the club’s crosshairs. His excellent work in England and track record with youngsters render him an exciting option.
Pep Guardiola gives his seal of approval
Now, as per Laia Tudel, Barcelona legend Pep Guardiola has recommended Joan Laporta to consider Roberto De Zerbi.
Presently managing Manchester City, the football world is well acquainted with the pedigree of Guardiola, who just last season led the Cityzens to a historic treble.
However, this was not the first time he achieved that feat, as he previously elevated Barcelona to similar heights while coaching the club.
Owing to his ties with the Catalan giants as well as his status as one of football’s best managers, his recommendation of De Zerbi carries significant weight and is likely to be seriously considered by Joan Laporta’s boardroom.
As such, Laporta has been watching Brighton closely to get an idea about how De Zerbi’s teams operate and how he works.
What roadblocks can Barcelona expect?
The Italian manager practices a style that undeniably resonates with Barcelona’s positional play principles.
However, acquiring him will not be a walk in the park. Indeed, the 44-year-old is bound by a contract with Brighton until 2027; it also contains a €15 million release clause, which Barça will certainly find difficult to pay considering their frail financial state.
Moreover, Bayern Munich are reportedly great admirers of De Zerbi and intend to replace him with Thomas Tuchel at the end of the season. Competing with the Bavarians may prevent Barça from landing his signature.
