After a somewhat impressive summer clearout, it was expected that Barcelona may soon overcome their economic problems.
However, as we approach the final few months of the season, Barça’s economic situation has reached a delicate point, where club president Joan Laporta may not have too many levers available.
Indeed, earlier in February, Barcelona’s spending limit was set at €204 million. At the beginning of the season, the number had stood at €270 million. Such a steep downturn came on the back of low revenue, coupled with rising expenses.
In the midst of Barcelona’s economic woes, Diario AS has come up with a comprehensive report, highlighting that Laporta is relying on three possible levers, in his bid to meet this season’s budget expectations.
The Camp Nou project
Barcelona’s number one emergency lever is the ongoing renovation projects at Camp Nou. Laporta will be hoping that these projects meet their deadlines and the club can return to Camp Nou as soon as possible.
This is largely because Barça have had less than desirable ticket sales and revenue from Estadi Olimpico this season.
Moving to a renovated Camp Nou, to that end, could go a long way in boosting the club’s revenue from ticket sales, parking and the museum.
Shirt sponsorship dilemma
A significant part of Barcelona’s revenue comes from their shirt sponsorship deal with Nike. But the relationship between the two entities are currently at a breaking point.
Puma are waiting on the sidelines, ready to hand Barcelona a better, more lucrative contract. But that would require Barça to terminate the contract with Nike, which would require certain legal expenses that the club can do without at the moment.
Player sales
Finally, Barcelona can always bank on player sales in an attempt to boost revenues in the coming summer
Even as we approach the final phase of the campaign, multiple Barcelona stars have been linked with moves away from Camp Nou, including Ronald Araujo and Frenkie de Jong among others.
Barcelona, though, have appeared quite reluctant in further trimming down the squad, notably rejecting advances from Bayern for Araujo earlier this year.
But if the Catalans continue to face economic pressure, they could be forced to consider the sale of at least one star player at the end of the season.
