FC Barcelona’s plan to strengthen their defensive midfield position is an open secret by now.

The team’s struggles over the past season have made it clear that not finding a suitable replacement for Sergio Busquets has taken a toll.

But the Catalans do not wish to repeat the same errors and have thus prioritized the recruitment of a pivot midfielder, having shortlisted many candidates.

Guido Rodriguez is already identified as a backup option, while Barcelona continues to keep tabs on elite possibilities as well, which includes Bayern Munich talisman Joshua Kimmich.

Bayern Munich are scouring replacements for Kimmich

Now, in an interesting update published by Mundo Deportivo, Barcelona have not forgotten about Kimmich and will make a move for the German if their finances permit.

Meanwhile, Bayern Munich are considering replacing Kimmich with Juventus midfielder Adrien Rabiot. The Frenchman may be able to sign a free transfer to Bayern given his Juventus deal expires in June 2024.

With the club already searching for potential alternatives, it can be speculated that Kimmich could be on his way out this summer. In that case, Barcelona would be eager to pounce on the situation.

Last summer, the Bavarians were firm on not letting Kimmich leave, but a shift in approach can be observed this time around.

With Bayern Munich losing the Bundesliga title for the first time in twelve years, there is also a sense that restructuring the squad is the best course of action, which casts doubts over Kimmich’s future in Germany.

However, he is sure to have a fair amount of suitors, and teams like Manchester City and PSG are possible destinations.

Ball in Barcelona’s court?

According to reports from earlier this month, Barcelona may have to pay between €30 and €35 million for Kimmich.

If they can muster those funds, Barça well have a good chance of overcoming any competition, especially since the player recently acknowledged Barcelona as an incredible club with a rich history. He has in the past hailed Xavi as his idol, too.

Ultimately, it remains to be seen if Bayern can acquire Kimmich’s replacement, as that could facilitate a possible transfer to Barcelona.
