With the 2023/24 season drawing to a close, Barcelona aren’t wasting any time gearing up for the next one. Preseason plans are already taking shape, featuring exciting clashes against Manchester City, AC Milan, and Real Madrid in the United States.

However, there’s another fixture on the horizon: the Joan Gamper Trophy. The prestigious trophy traditionally marks the official presentation of the Barcelona team for the upcoming season.

This year, the 58th edition of the tournament is set to be held at the Montjuic on the weekend of August 11, following the US tour and a week before La Liga kicks off.

Barcelona in talks with Werder Bremen

According to Diario SPORT, Barcelona are close to finalizing a deal with Werder Bremen as their opponent for the Joan Gamper Trophy.

This wouldn’t be the first encounter between the two sides. Their rivalry stretches back to six previous encounters in European competitions, including clashes in the UEFA Champions League and Super Cup.

The head-to-head record favour Barcelona with four wins and two draws, with Barca outscoring Werder Bremen 11 goals to 4. Interestingly, both clubs celebrated their 125th anniversary this season.

While Barcelona are bracing themselves for a trophyless 2023/24 campaign, Bremen are languishing in the mid-table position in the Bundesliga.

The North German giants were in contention for a European place for a brief period, but their poor form during the final phase of the campaign dragged them back to mid-table spots.

Providing the two parties reach an agreement, Werder Bremen will be a relatively less-decorated Joan Gamper trophy opposition to what Barcelona have seen in recent years.

In 2021, Barcelona took on Juventus, which was followed by a clash against North American giants Pumas UNAM in 2022. Last year, the Catalans were up against Tottenham Hotspur.

Werder Bremen, though, are a challenging team in their own right and are capable of taking down even the biggest of teams on their day.
