Barcelona were dealt with two major injury blows last night, with both Pedri and Frenkie de Jong picking up rather serious-looking knocks.
Pedri’s injury, in particular, looked particularly serious and everything suggests he could be out for a long period, possibly up to five to six weeks.
The absence of Pedri and de Jong serve as a crushing blow to Barcelona, who were hoping to stage a late fight for the league title.
Barcelona’s record without Pedri and de Jong this season
However, let’s take a moment and look back at Barcelona’s statistics this season, especially when the team was without both de Jong and Pedri in the starting eleven.
Barça have played a total of eight matches where neither Pedri nor de Jong were a part of the team. In those eight matches, the Catalans have not only been able to hold their own but also enjoyed a string of impressive performances.
Indeed, Barcelona have won five of those eight matches, drawing two while losing only one. The only defeat came against Real Madrid at Estadio Montjuic.

While there is no doubt that these two individuals had a supreme impact on Barcelona’s game and style of play, the results have been quite the same even without them.
However, the scenario is a tad bit different this time around. Unlike the first half of the campaign, Xavi is also missing another young starlet Gavi, which further minimises the midfield options for the Barcelona coach.
At the same time, injuries to Pedri and de Jong should serve as an opportunity for others to step up to the plate and prove themselves, including bright young stars such as Fermin Lopez and Marc Casado, among others.
