Barcelona have seen a number of young talents storm into the first-team setup this season with the likes of Lamine Yamal, Fermin Lopez, Marc Guiu, Pau Cubarsi, and Hector Fort, slowly establishing a foothold in the senior squad.
More players are knocking on the doors and are on the cusp of a breakthrough, one of whom happens to be 19-year-old versatile attacking midfielder Unai Hernandez.
The teenage gem joined La Masia from Girona’s academy in the summer of 2022 and has made rapid strides since.
Unai Hernandez finished his first season with Barcelona’s Juvenil A outfit as the top scorer with 15 goals. Currently part of the Barça Atletic roster, he is the second-highest goalscorer, only behind Pau Victor.
Unai Hernandez to be rewarded with a new deal
Given his explosive performances in the youth and reserve ranks over the past two years, Barcelona are set to reward Unai Hernandez with a new contract, reports Jaume Mercet of SPORT.
The 19-year-old is a versatile player who can operate as an attacking midfielder, an interior, or even as a left-winger and has impressed in each of those roles.
The Spaniard has netted five goals and set up four more for Rafa Marquez’s side in the ongoing campaign, and has even trained with the senior team on several occasions.
Unai Hernandez’s current contract runs out in the summer of 2025 at which point Barça can trigger a two-year extension.
However, the plan is for the Blaugrana to hand him a new contract altogether with an improvement on his wages keeping in mind his contributions on the field.
The youngster is delighted with the treatment he has received at Barcelona in his first two years and is eager to keep on improving so that he can become a first-team player.
A senior debut is not far away for Unai Hernandez and the youngster will also be rewarded with a new contract for his progress in the last 20 months.
