In recent weeks, there has been a major turnaround as far as the future of Ronald Araujo is concerned.
After a return from a long injury layoff, many expected Barcelona to consider selling the Uruguayan international, who had fallen behind Inigo Martinez and Pau Cubarsi in the pecking order.
However, recent reports suggest Araujo is all set to continue at Barcelona. In fact, the Catalans have already convinced the defender to stay and sign a new contract.
Araujo set to pen five-year deal
Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has now offered his take on the future of Araujo, offering some key details.
As per Romano, Araujo is all set to sign a new long-term deal at Barcelona, which will be valid until 2031. This could go a long way in helping Barcelona safeguard the future of the club captain.
Araujo could sign the new deal as soon as Thursday, as every other detail in the new contract has already been green-lit.
The approval was received by Barcelona’s sporting director Deco, who personally approached the player and his agent regarding the details of the contract.
It appears Araujo is on board with the idea of penning a long-term contract at Barcelona, despite the fact that Inigo and Cubarsi have become the club’s go-to options at centre-back this season.
Perhaps Araujo realises that Barcelona might soon need to find a replacement for the ageing Martinez and that is where he could come into the fray.
This could be especially relevant if Barcelona fail to complete the deal to sign Jonathan Tah from Bayer Leverkusen in the summer.
