Barcelona have always had a large representation in the Spain national team squad and have played a key role in the success that La Roja have achieved over the years.
Heading into the summer’s UEFA Euro 2024, the story will not be any different as players like Pedri, Ferran Torres, Lamine Yamal, and possibly even Pau Cubarsi could be a part of the Spain squad.
Gavi and Alejandro Balde would have been certain to participate as well if not for their injuries keeping them out.
Now, it appears that an unlikely member of the Barça contingent could be joining Luis de la Fuente’s roster for the summer’s tournament.
Inigo Martinez in line for a call-up
Indeed, as per SPORT, Barcelona veteran defender Inigo Martinez has emerged as a strong candidate to be named in the Spain squad list for the UEFA Euro 2024 in Germany.
Luis de la Fuente will announce the list of 26 called-up players for Germany on 27 May and the Basque centre-back has a chance of being included in the squad.
Following the Catalans’ recent results, Xavi could turn to the experience of Martinez in defence for the final four La Liga fixtures of the season, which could end up giving him a shot at forcing his way into the Spain squad.
Factors that help Martinez
De la Fuente is very aware of Martinez. The Barcelona defender was in the Spain manager’s first list as coach and returned to the one after recovering his competitive rhythm after a long Achilles tendon injury.
Another factor in Martinez’s favour is UEFA’s decision to allow 26 players to be named in the squad list instead of the usual 23.
Aymeric Laporte and Robin Le Normand have a fixed place in the Spain squad and Pau Cubarsi is also likely to be on the list.
There is still a place for a fourth centre-back, but two candidates could miss out due to injury: David García and Vivian.
The Osasuna player is almost ruled out after a relapse of a muscle injury, while the Athletic Club star is struggling with a back problem, potentially opening the door for Martinez.
