Barcelona are trying to sort out their squad ahead of next season, which means deciding the futures of several players who are not immediately regular starters or crucial to the side.
This list includes a certain Sergi Roberto, who is out of a contract in the summer. The current captain of the side, the Spaniard is far from the first option in both, the midfield or the right-back position, but is crucial to the team dynamics, as Xavi suggested.
As such, on Xavi’s request, Barcelona have been ready to offer Roberto a one-year contract extension this summer.
However, recent reports have suggested that Roberto’s future also heavily depends on Xavi’s.
The Barcelona coach is expected to be sacked by Joan Laporta once the season officially ends after the controversy surrounding his words about the club’s financial condition.
Roberto has offers
As far as Roberto is concerned, though, Helena Condis suggests that his agent is waiting to meet Deco this week. The agreement between the player and the club has been finalised verbally, but nothing has been signed yet.
Barcelona have asked the player for more patience as they are trying to sort out their finances and other off-the-pitch aspects of the club.
That said, Roberto has an offer from another club on the table ready be signed in case Barcelona believe there will be problems registering him and an extension is not signed at the end of the season.
Changes at Barcelona if Roberto leaves
While there will not be any damage done to the qualify of the squad at offer in case Roberto leaves, there will be a change of captaincy at the club, first and foremost.
Marc-Andre ter Stegen will be promoted to become the first-choice captain, with Roberto acting as his deputy. The German has already captained the team multiple times this season.
Elsewhere, we can expect someone like Marc Casado to get regular call-ups to the senior team to fill in the Roberto-shaped void, while the likes of Pau Prim could also be getting an early debut.
