Barcelona would consider selling one of two key midfielders as a last resort

Barcelona are experiencing yet another crisis, which was compounded by a 4-1 defeat at the hands of Real Madrid in the Spanish Super Cup final.

Although the board continues to back Xavi Hernandez, it is apparent that Barcelona would require a few changes in the roster, if they are to tackle through the economic crisis.

For that, the club must offload some of the star players in the setup, as they look to lower the inflated salary mass.

Barcelona open to selling de Jong, Gundogan

To that end, a recent report from SPORT has offered a fresh update on Barcelona’s team planning, suggesting that sporting director Deco wants Xavi to continue with a 4-3-3 formation going forward.

Deco does not prefer a four-man midfield option and wants Xavi to focus on more attacking firepower. A 4-3-3 may, therefore, allow Barcelona to shelf one of the midfielders.

On that note, Barcelona are open to offloading Frenkie de Jong, if necessary. The Dutchman, despite emerging as one of Barça’s best performers under Xavi, does not have a guaranteed future at Camp Nou.

Given his age and experience, de Jong has a high valuation in the market, which should play into the hands of Barcelona. His sale, in fact, could significantly solve the club’s economic woes.

Another midfielder Barcelona are open to selling is Ilkay Gundogan. The former Manchester City star was roped in this summer on a free transfer.

While Gundogan has certainly had an impact, it appears Barça are open to continuing without him going forward, especially given his age.

Considering the fact that Gundogan joined Barça on a free transfer, his sale could allow the Catalans to earn a considerable profit, especially with his contract not expiring until 2025.

It must be noted that such a move is only considered a last resort option by the reigning La Liga champions and not something that they intend to pull the trigger on at any given opportunity.
