While Bayer Leverkusen celebrates a well-deserved championship title, Bayern Munich prepares its revenge worthy of a Hollywood movie antagonist. In addition to having missed the Bundesliga trophy for the first time in 12 years, the Bavarian club also had to endure disappointment in the German Cup with this elimination in the 2nd round against Saarbrücken. Only the Champions League can still save the Bavarians from a possible blank season (2-2 in the first leg against Arsenal in London). As a result of this Munich tragedy, German coach Thomas Tuchel is already certain to pack up at the end of the season. His departure was made official a few weeks ago and Bayern management seems to have agreed on the successor to the former PSG and Chelsea coach.
According to information from Sky Germany, Bayern are now in the home stretch in the search for their new coach: “The white smoke will rise at some point”announced last week Max Eberl, Bavarian leader, on Prime Video in London about internal discussions to find the future Munich coach. Already mentioned in recent weeks by the German press after the contract extension of Xabi Alonso at Leverkusen, Julian Nagelsmann, current Germany coach, brings everyone in agreement in the Bavarian management. The 36-year-old tactician would in principle be ready to take over as Bayern coach for the second time in his career next summer after the Euro at home (June 14 – July 14).
A veteran of the house to the rescue!
According to the indiscretions of Sky Germany, Max Eberl, new sporting director of Bayern and Christoph Freund led the discussions and also took charge of the negotiations with Julian Nagelsmann’s Sports360 agency. Max Eberl is the strong man in the coaching search and believes Julian Nagelsmann will have another successful start with Bayern. The management would say they are ready to unconditionally support Nagelsmann in his possible sensational comeback while demanding absolute passion and performance. The two were also in contact when the coach requested specific explanations by telephone before the last international break regarding the non-call-up of Leon Goretzka. As a reminder, the technician, native of Landsberg am Lech, had signed a five-season contract with Bayern for a record compensation for a coach of 25 million euros, before being surprisingly sacked in March 2023.
Furthermore, according to the German media, in addition to Nagelsmann, Roberto De Zerbi (Brighton) and Unai Emery (Aston Villa) are still part of the list of possible plan B, unlike Ralf Rangnick who is not there. No contact has also taken place with Bavarian management and Zinedine Zidane in recent days according to Sky Germany, as reported by the Spanish daily Marca. The emphasis is now on full engagement in negotiations with Nagelsmann, for whom honorary president Uli Hoeneß recently gave the green light. If Nagelsmann were to say yes to Bayern, it would be a real blow for the German Football Association (DFB). Managers Bernd Neuendorf and Rudi Völler wanted to extend their national coach until the 2026 World Cup inclusive and would then need a new national coach after next summer’s European Championship.
