The Supreme Court has ruled that state Governors must no longer interfere with the funds designated for the 774 local government areas in Nigeria.
The court declared that state control of local government funds is unconstitutional.
This decision follows the hearing on June 13, presided over by Justice Garba Mohammed Lawal, where the federal government and the 36 State Governors presented their arguments. Justice Lawal, leading a seven-member panel of Supreme Court Justices, had reserved judgment, notifying all parties that they would be informed once the judgment was ready.
Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) Prince Lateef Fagbemi, SAN, represented the federal government, while the 36 State governors were represented by their respective lawyers.
