Ahead of the 2024 Ondo State governorship election, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has unveiled the final list of candidates and their running mates.
This information was disclosed by Sam Olumekun, INEC’s National Commissioner and head of the Information and Voter Education Committee, in a statement on Thursday in Abuja.
Olumekun indicated that the candidates’ personal details and those of their running mates are now accessible at INEC offices throughout the state and local government areas in Ondo. He also mentioned that the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) and the Social Democratic Party (SDP) conducted fresh primaries to replace their initially chosen candidates and running mates by the June 10 deadline, in line with Section 33 of the Electoral Act 2022.
Following the completion of the nomination process, political parties can officially begin their public campaigns from Wednesday, June 19, until midnight on November 14. Olumekun stressed that as the campaign phase starts, candidates, their agents, and supporters must follow legal requirements and INEC’s guidelines.
Campaign activities should be marked by civility and respect, avoiding inflammatory language, violence, voter inducement, and other breaches, as outlined in Sections 92-97 of the Electoral Act 2022.
The Ondo State Governorship Election is scheduled for Saturday, November 16, 2024 when the candidates will prove their popularity at the poll.
