Telecom giant MTN has closed all its stores and service centers across Nigeria in response to widespread outrage from subscribers.
The closure follows an incident on Sunday when MTN suspended service for users due to discrepancies between their National Identification Number and SIM registration.
A viral video on social media shows a mob vandalizing an MTN office in FESTAC Town, Lagos, and destroying a barricade outside the building. The unrest was sparked by the network’s decision to block lines.
In reaction to the unrest, Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer Benjamin Hundeyin confirmed that order had been restored by the FESTAC DPO and his team.
MTN announced on Tuesday that all its shops nationwide would be closed for the day, stating: “Yello customer, please be informed that our shops nationwide will be closed today, 30th July 2024.”
