Hoodlums targeted members of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) as they enforced the ongoing indefinite strike in Jos, the capital of Plateau State.
The NLC and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) initiated a nationwide shutdown of the economy on Monday due to the federal government’s refusal to accept the proposed N494,000 Minimum Wage.
During the strike enforcement in Jos, individuals associated with a private transport company reportedly assaulted NLC members, resulting in several injuries and hospitalizations.
In his statement to reporters, the Vice Chairman of NLC in Plateau, Sunday Ayodele, elaborated: “Immediately the touts at the park saw us arriving at the gate, they started hurling stones at us, mistaking us for members of the NURTW. Unknown to us, there is an ongoing dispute between the private transport company and NURTW Jos. The touts in the park indiscriminately attacked our members, leaving four NLC members injured. It took the intervention of security agencies to restore calm at the park. We had to withdraw our enforcement team from the park to allow peace to prevail.”
