Some interesting comments on Chelsea from Todd Boehly.
The club’s chairman speaking in Los Angeles at the Sportico conference.
The Chelsea part-owner claiming he now has ‘proof’ that their cunning plan is working.
A plan that has seen them spend a billion pounds on signings in less than two years AND Pochettino the fourth manager to be working under this Chelsea ownership, not counting Bruno Saltor who was a caretaker boss briefly.
So what is this ‘proof’ then that has been presented in Los Angeles, showing the cunning ownership plan is working?
Two and a half matches.
Yes, Todd Boehly declaring that less than four hours of football us ‘proof’ that the plan is now working.
The Chelsea part owner points to a 2-2 draw against Aston Villa, then home wins against Tottenham and Chelsea.
Well that’s convinced me!!!
The thing is as well, look closer and these three results, just how brilliant are they in reality?
Since Aston Villa drew 2-2 with Chelsea, Emery’s side have gone on to lose their next next three matches (all competitions).
Chelsea won 2-0 at home against Tottenham BUT Spurs have also lost their other three most recent games, conceding 11 goals in that trio of matches, including the 4-0 at St James’ Park which could have been a far bigger scoreline.
As for West Ham, they are in total freefall and the club a shambles, with David Moyes leaving. The Hammers have won only one of their last nine Premier League games and only two of their last thirteen in all competitions.
In reality, Chelsea have met three clubs in terrible form.
Indeed, before winning these last two home games against Tottenham and West Ham, Chelsea had only won three of their last eleven games against Premier League clubs (in all competitions).
Who knows what Todd Boehly will be claiming if Chelsea can make it three wins in a row, when they play relegation battlers Nottingham Forest!!
BBC Sport report after Todd Boehly comments on Chelsea – 9 May 2024:
Chelsea chairman Todd Boehly says the team’s recent form is proof the club’s plan is “coming together” under Mauricio Pochettino.
The Blues are unbeaten in their past three matches, beating West Ham and Tottenham after a spirited draw at Aston Villa.
Those results have helped Chelsea climb up to seventh in the Premier League, which could secure European football next season, while they are just two points behind sixth-placed Newcastle.
Boehly was accused of making the club a “laughing stock” by a supporters’ group in March but the American says the board’s plans are starting to come to fruition.
Speaking at a Sportico conference in Los Angeles on Wednesday, Boehly said: “We’ve seen the last two and a half games… in the second half at Aston Villa [2-2 draw] and Tottenham [2-0 win] and West Ham [5-0 win] where we played beautiful football.
“It was so fluid, it was exactly the way we drew it up, when we came out of the back, built up and moved up the pitch, [it was] very organised and the number of shots we had.
“In those two and a half games, you could really start to see what we were working on coming together.”
