Chelsea loanee and former Manchester United winger Jadon Sancho has been told he has jeopardised his career with a ‘ridiculous’ mistake.
Sancho has had a mixed spell at Stamford Bridge since joining on loan from fellow Premier League club United last summer.
The England international cost more than £70m when he joined Manchester United in 2021 but failed to produce his best form at Old Trafford.
Sancho has shown glimpses of his potential for the Blues but has not been the impactful signing Enzo Maresca was hoping for, scoring just twice since his move from Manchester.
The 24-year-old surprised his social media followers with a pointed message to former United teammate and close friend Marcus Rashford following his Aston Villa debut at the weekend.
Rashford joined Unai Emery’s side on loan towards the end of the January transfer window and made his Villa debut in Sunday’s FA Cup victory over Tottenham.
‘Thank you for the warm welcome,’ Rashford posted on Instagram after the game. ‘Great team performance.’
Sancho responded with a one-word message, writing ‘freedom’ with a praying emoji. His comment attracted more than 35,000 likes in 48 hours.
Ex-Premier League goalkeeper Ben Foster believes it was a ‘ridiculous’ thing to do given Sancho and Rashford are both still Manchester United players.
Chelsea agreed to sign Sancho on a permanent deal when they secured his services on loan last summer but Rashford is set to return to Old Trafford at the end of the season.
‘It’s incredible considering he’s still employed by Manchester United,’ Foster said on his YouTube channel. ‘They both are. What is he doing?
‘That’s ridiculous because he is still actually employed by Manchester United, so is Marcus Rashford.
‘It just reeks of toxicity at United. It reeks of an unhappy place to be, that everybody’s buzzing for someone to get out [of the club].’
Professional footballer Ben Tozer was also baffled by Sancho’s decision and believes he could have jeopardised future moves with his social media activity.
The Forest Green defender, who has also played for the likes of Wrexham, Cheltenham Town, Newport County, Northampton Town and Newcastle United, said: ‘What is he doing?
‘He doesn’t realise the knock-on effect that could have on the rest of his career.
‘Just for that comment. Why do it? What’s the point of doing it? Other managers are going to be like, “I don’t like that, I don’t like that attitude”.’
Meanwhile, Aston Villa boss Emery praised Rashford’s performance after his debut in the FA Cup win over Spurs.
‘Marcus Rashford and Marco Asensio, we watched their skill and how they helped us and will help us again in the next months in the different competitions we will face,’ he said.
Asked about the impact of Rashford and Asensio on the squad, Aston Villa’s Morgan Rogers added: ‘It pushes us along, we want to take what we can from the experienced players in the squad.
‘It’s massive to have people like that in the building and hopefully we can just push each other. The second goal was important, we played well but we hadn’t killed the game off.’
